چکیده

This paper argues that Old Japanese (eighth century) had split alignment, with nominative-accusative alignment in main clauses and active alignment in nominalized clauses. The main arguments for active alignment in nominalized clause come from ga-marking of active subjects and the distribution oftwo verbal prefixes: /-for active predicates and safor inactive predicates (cf. Yanagida, In: Hasegawa (ed.) Nihongo no shubun gensho [Main clause phenomena in Japanese], 2007b). We review the treatment of non-accusative alignment and argue that active alignment should be analyzed as as a distinct type. We propose a formal analysis of active alignment in nominalized clauses in Old Japanese. The external argument is assigned inherent case, spelled out as ga, in situ in Spec, v. Object arguments are licensed by several distinct mechanisms, including incorporation (Yanagida, In: Miyamoto (ed.) MIT Working Papers in Linguistics, 2007a) and case assignment by a functional head above vP. The latter accounts for the distinctive O wo S ga V word order of OJ nominalized clauses noted by Yanagida (J. of East Asian Linguistics, 2006). Inability to assign object case is a property of [nominal] v, as proposed by Miyagawa (Structure and case marking in Japanese. Syntax and Semantics, vol. 22, 1989). We discuss the diachronic origins of the OJ active alignment system and point out that it exemplifies a cross-linguistically attested pattern of non-accusative alignment in clauses that originate from nominalizations. Skeletal Sarcoma on the Site of Retained War Bullet Fragments and a Literature Review on Long-Term Complications of Retained War Shells

Long-term complications of retained war fragments in the body are not completely known. Also, bullet migration and slow resorption of metals and distortion in some imaging modalities are frequent and well recognized complications but, now we are concerned about neoplastic changes near the retained war fragments. We reviewed the literature on complication of retained war fragments and report o...

Lexical Cohesion and Literariness in Malcolm X's " The Ballot or the Bullet"

This paper unearths the contribution of lexical cohesion to the textuality and overall meaning of Malcolm X’s speech 'The Ballot or the Bullet'. Drawing on Halliday and Hasan’s (1976) and Hoey’s (1991) theory of cohesion, specifically lexical   cohesion, whose main thrust is the role of lexical items in not only contributing to meaning but also serving as cohesive ties, the paper discusses how ...

The Magnetohydrodynamics of Supersonic Gas Clouds: MHD Cosmic Bullets and Wind-Swept Clumps

We report an extensive set of two-dimensional MHD simulations exploring the role and evolution of magnetic fields in the dynamics of supersonic plasma clumps. We examine the influence of both ambient field strength and orientation on the problem. Of those two characteristics, field orientation is far more important in the cases we have considered with β0 = pg/pb ≥ 1. That is due to the geometry...

Spontaneous migration of a retained bullet within the brain: a case report.

Gunshot injury to the head is usually mortal, and spontaneous migration of a retained bullet is rare. We report the case of a 23-year-old man with a spontaneously migrated bullet within the brain. Cranial computerized tomography (CT) indicated that the bullet was lodged deeply in the left parietal region. The patient was conscious and had right homonymous hemianopsia. The bullet was close to th...

Split 24-F Amplatz dilator for percutaneous extraction of an intravascular bullet: case report and technical note.

An intravascular bullet was retrieved percutaneously in a 17-year-old boy with the use of a modified 24-F Amplatz dilator. The dilator was modified by means of a longitudinal incision with removal of a wedge at the distal tip of the tapered portion of the dilator. The bullet, which was located in the left pulmonary artery, was removed via the right femoral vein. No complications occurred.
